General:
Perennial herb from a short thick rhizome and branched stem-base; stems 1 to several, tufted, spreading to erect, 15-60 cm tall, greenish, thinly long-hairy to nearly smooth.
Leaves:
Basal leaves long-stalked, pinnately compound; leaflets 5 to 9 (11), closely crowded, egg-shaped, 1-5 cm long, cleft halfway to the midrib into lanceolate teeth, greenish and smooth on the upper surface, hairy to nearly smooth beneath; stem leaves alternate, 2 or 3.
Flowers:
Inflorescence an open terminal cluster of several to many stalked flowers; corollas yellow, bowl-shaped, the petals 5, heart-shaped, 6-11 mm long, shallowly notched at the tip; calyces sparsely coarse-hairy, 5-lobed, the lobes egg-shaped, alternating with 5 slightly shorter, lanceolate bractlets; ovaries superior; stamens about 20.
Fruits:
Achenes, numerous, clustered, lopsided-egg-shaped, about 1.5 mm long, olive-brown, smooth.

Habitat / Range

Moist to wet, open rocky slopes, meadows and open forests in the montane to alpine zones; infrequent throughout BC south of 55oN; E to W AB and S to N CA.
